Their home arena is the Palace of Auburn Hills. The team was founded in Fort Wayne Indiana by Fred Zollner, they were originally known as Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons. The Pistons joined the National Basketball League (NBA) in 1948 and 1957 they moved to Detroit. They have won three championships and the most recent being in 2004.
In 1974 Zollner sold the pistons to Bill Davidson who until his death in March 2009 was the teams principal owner. In 1978 the pistons moved from downtown Detroit to the suburbs of Pontiac where they played in the Silverdome.
In 1990 the Detroit Pistons successfully defended their division title and won their first two rounds in the playoffs, they advanced to the eastern conference finals for the 4th straight year. After winning the eastern conference finals defeating the Chicago bulls, they advanced to the NBA finals where the Detroit Pistons faced the Portland Trail Blazers at the Palace. They also won the finals and Isaiah Thomas was named NBA finals MVP.
After poor performance in the 1994 season, the Detroit pistons signed Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Cedric Ceballos, Loy Vaught and the late Bison Dele. The head coaching also changed from Ron Rothstein to Don Chaney.
In 2000 after losing to the Miami Heat in the playoffs, Joe Dumars was hired as the Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations but he face some setbacks in the team as Grant Hill left the team to join the Orlando Magic the exchange saw the pistons getting Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins from the Orlando Magic. The two from Orlando entered the team's starting lineup. After suffering through 2000-01 seasons, Dumars fired George Irvine who was the head coach and he was replaced by Rick Carlisle, also after that season the Pistons returned to their red, white and blue uniforms.
