New Jersey Nets News, standings, schedule and more... And more... The New Jersey Nets joined the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967. Originally, the Nets were called the New Jersey Americans and their first home was the Teaneck Armory. Their stint in the ABA brought them 7 appearances in the playoffs and 2 championship trophies (1974 and 1976). Julius "Dr. J" Erving and "Super" John Williamson led the team to victory alongside Bill Melchionni and Wendell Ladner. All these players already hung their jerseys.
In 1976, the New Jersey Nets started their NBA journey without Julius Erving who had to transfer to Philadelphia 76ers. In 1980, the Nets played under the tutelage of Larry Brown who is now a Hall of Fame awardee. With 44 wins under their cap, the team made it to the playoffs (their second). One of the highlights of the New Jersey Nets' basketball journey came in 1984. Buck Williams, Micheal Ray Richardson, Darryl Dawkins, Otis Birdsong and Albert King embraced the spotlight when they defeated the defending champion Sixers during the first round. They ended the season by extending the Semifinal Round to six games against Milwaukee Bucks.
The 90's has proven to be a great era for the New Jersey Nets. The team welcomed Derrick Coleman and Kenny Anderson as rookies. In 1992, they found themselves in the playoffs. At that time, Chuck Daly, another Hall of Famer, called the shots as head coach. During the latter part of this decade, great basketball players like Sam Cassell, Keith Van Horn, Kendall Gill, Stephon Marbury and Kerry Kittles joined the Nets.
It was a whole new beginning for the New Jersey Nets starting year 2000. One of the best players of all time came to the team as part of the trade between him and Stephon Marbury. To complete the feisty line up, Eddie Griffin was traded for Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong. Armed with exceptional skills, teamwork, discipline and determination, the New Jersey Nets reached the conference championship round in 2002 and 2003 against the Lakers (4 - 0) and the Spurs (4 - 2) respectively. However, they did not taste victory.
In the 2003 - 2004 season, the New Jersey Nets became part of the semifinals even though their coach Byron Scott was replaced by Lawrence Frank. During the off season, an unexpected twist came when Vince Carter was welcomed to the team. This amazing player pushed the team to win 10 of its last 12 games.
The New Jersey Nets may have experienced a roller coaster ride in their NBA journey but one thing is for sure. The next season promises fans, especially those who are in their home court, the Prudential Center, more excitement and thrill just like before when they started.
