Washington Wizards News, standings, schedule and more... And more... The Washington Wizards story began in 1961 when the club was known as the Chicago Packers. After their first year the name was changed in 1962 when they became known as the Chicago Zephyrs. This name was as equally short lived. In 1963 the franchise moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Bullets. It was in this form that the team got it's first taste of success. The Bullets reached the Western Conference Finals where they played well but ultimately lost to the L.A. Lakers.
Shortly after, the franchise was to undergo yet another transformation, moving to Washington where they have remained to this day. The name changed again to the Capitol Bullets followed by the Washington Bullets and finally to the teams current name, the Washington Wizards. They eventually settled into their current home stadium, The Verizon Center.
It was in the ten years between 1969 and 1979 that the team experienced it's best years. In the 1977 season the team won the NBA championship with a major upset victory against the Seattle Super Sonics. During this decade the franchise won 7 division titles, 4 conference titles and the championship.
The Wizards have had several great players during their history. The greatest basketball player ever, Michael Jordan ended his career with the Wizards, coming out of retirement to play two seasons from 2001 to 2003. Despite his advancing years and injury problems Jordan was still a high quality player and there was a notable difference in the team when Jordan played. In his last season Jordan played in all 82 games despite knee problems and averaged 20 points per game.
Although Jordan was still an excellent player he was well past his prime, possibly the greatest player the franchise has ever seen was Elvin Hayes. He was a key part in the glory years and is still a record holder in many categories for the franchise. Most notably for points scored with an impressive haul of 15551.
