Kansas City Chiefs News, standings, schedule and more... And more... Lamar Hunt, a 26 year old Texan loved the idea of having his own NFL team. So he started his own league, the American Football League, giving himself as the president of that league with his Texas based team, the Dallas Texans. In their third season, the Texans won the league title over the Houston Oilers 27-20 in 1962.
Lamar saw the best interests of the team to later be moved to Kansas City and to be renamed the Chiefs. The competition with the Cowboys hurt the club. That team won a second AFL title in 1966 and went on to the first super bowl to play the Green Bay Packers in a disappointing loss to a dominating team and according to some, a dominating league over the rival AFL.
The Chiefs made it back to the big game in 1969 with a trip that featured quarterback Len Dawson past his prime, battling injuries but regaining a championship for the team, upsetting the NFL team Vikings 23-7. This win would even up the score between the two rival leagues at 2-2.
Hunt allowed Hank Stram, coach of the Chiefs, to tap into markets of players from different schools to help break racial barriers. That decision helped propel the team with players that made Hall of Fame honors including Buck Buchanan, Bobby Bell, and Willie Lanier on the defensive side. Jan Stenerud was the first full time kicker to be selected to the Hall.
The 1972 the Chiefs came to play in the new Arrowhead stadium leaving the old Municipal Stadium, increasing the stadium capacity about 28,000.
The Chiefs enjoyed many playoff appearances and division titles starting in the late 1980's with Mary Schotenheimer as coach from 1989-98. Marty always seemed to have lost to great quarterback John Elway through the years. Schotenheimer was not known as a big game winner.
The Chiefs captured another western division title in 2010, lead by a new quarterback Matt Cassel and coach Todd Haley. They hope to bring the Chiefs at least back to the respectable playoff contenders they were during the 90's.
