Chicago Blackhawks News, standings, schedule and more... And more... Ever since the begining of the National Hockey League, the Chicago Blackhawks have made their presence felt as reflected through their various championship and semis appearances. Known to Chicago people as simply Hawks, the team of professional ice hockey players is among the six original NHL teams to see action on ice. The Chicago Stadium housed the Blackhawks for 65 years until the team found their new home at the United Center.
It was in 1926 when the Blackhawks became a part of NHL, with most of their lineup members coming from the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League. The team's monicker, Blackhawk, may have been drawn from the background of the first owner, Frederic McLaughlin, a 33rd Machine Gun Battalion commander of the 86th Infantry Division during the first World War.
During their first season, the Chicago Blackhawks finished at third place, a promising start for the whole team. The next series, however, was highlighted by "The Curse of the Muldoon," after McLaughlin fired coach Pete Muldoon. He reportedly "cursed" the team so that they would never have to finish first. This, however, was debunked and proved untrue after sportswriter Jim Coleman admitted the fabrication of the statement.
In 1931, Chicago Blackhawks made it the the Stanley Cup Final, their first ever. Despite a strong lineup led by goal scorer Johnny Gottselig, Cy Wentworth on defensive end and Charlie Gardiner manning the goal, the Blackhawks bowed down to Montreal Canadiens and lost the cup. It was in 1934 when the Blackhawks finally bagged the crown after defeating Detroit Red Wings with a score of 1-0 after double overtime. Four years later, the team finally made another unforgettable championship appearance after winning over the Toronto Maple Leafs with an injured goalkeeper Mike Karakas. Despite their playoffs record of 14-25, the Blackhawks were still able to prove that having a poor season records is not a hindrance in winning the championship crown.
The Chicago Blackhawks won another cup in 1961 after the addition of Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote and Stan Mikita on the team. Later on, Mikita won back-to-back MVP awards, while Pilote won three Norris Trophies and Hall was named as the First or Second All-Star goal tender. This was followed with another title after many years of waiting during the 2009-2010 season.
