And more...A new blood of professional ice hockey players, the Columbus Blue Jackets were born 22 years after Cleveland Barons bid goodbye to the world of hockey. The building of a new franchise, however, was not that easy for the people of Columbus. An arena must be built to serve as the home court of the new team, and with a large amount of money needed to finance the proposal in just a short period of time, it was almost next to impossible. The Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company guaranteed to finance an arena for the new ice hockey team of Ohio in 1997 and three years later, Blue Jackets were already able to join the 2000 National Hockey League Expansion Draft in Calgary, Alberta. With different players drafted and picked from various NHL teams, the Columbus Blue Jackets found it difficult to enter the playoffs during their first appearance with a record of 28-39-6 for 71 points, the poorest in Central Division. The team acquired Ron Tugnutt in 2000, bringing in goaltending prowess to the Blue Jackets. During the next season, Ray Whitney from the Florida Panthers was added to the lineup, and later on set a franchise record in scoring with 61 points. In March 2002, the NHL community especially the Blue Jackets grieved over an accident when a deflected puck hit the 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil at the Nationwide Arena. This prompted the installation of large nylon mesh nets behind all goals of NHL arenas. The 2002-2003 was another losing season for the Blue Jackets even with the newly acquired Rick Nash on the team. Eventually, Dave King, the head coach since the team's entry to NHL was fired and replaced by general manager Doug MacLean. A new goalie, Marc Dean was introduced to the Columbus crowd who later on set a franchise and League record of 77 games (4,511 minutes) played in one season. The next season, the Blue Jackets, again failed to enter the playoffs but at least were able to finish one spot higher in Central Division, wth the Chicago Blackhawks finishing last.
