When the Minnesota North Stars formalized their exit from the league in 1993, Mayor Norm Coleman made his move to create an expansion franchise or relocate the existing franchise to St. Paul. Lemaire, during his career as a hockey player, was honored to be a part of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985 and became the 11th coach to win over 500 games in the history of NHL. The team failed to enter the playoffs the next season, with a record of 26-35-12-9, the worst in the pack. Another player, however, was seen to have lots of potentials in the person of Andrew Brunette. Brunette scored a significant 69 points to lead the team in scoring during the season. A year after, the Wild saw action with the Colorado Avalanche to finally qualify for a playoff appearance. But when faced with a tougher contender Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the Minnesota pride were sent home with 0-4 record for the Western Conference Finals. But their remarkable stint to reach the playoffs was enough for them to set a record when they were able to win two seven-game series. The Minnesota Wild formed a limited and rare partnership with the Minnesota Sports and Entertainment, the owner of the team until 2008.
