And more...Nashville is a town in Tennessee known for Elvis, country music, and the Grand Old Opry. However, it is also home to the Nashville Predators, a professional hockey team of the Western Conference in the National Hockey League. The Predators play in the Bridgestone Arena, and their logo is the saber-toothed tiger in blue, gray, red and gold. In 1962, the Dixie Flyers were founded by Larry Schmittou, but the team folded less than a decade later. Trying again, he made a second attempt and started the Nashville South Stars, recruiting famous players like Bob Suter, but the team only lasted two years. In 1996, Nashville once again tried to start a team called the Nashville Nighthawks, which was later renamed to the Ice Flyers. This was only a minor league team though. Disappointed that there was no NHL team in Tennessee, Nashville continued to ask the league for a franchise. Finally, in 1997, the NHL granted a franchise to Nashville, and the Predators played their first game in 1998. In their first season, they were the second to last team in the Western Conference. Since that first game, the team has performed admirably, and even made it to the semifinals in the 2010-11 season, which is impressive for a team that was only 13 years old. The Stanley cup eluded the Predators though. Like many other new teams, the Predators have signed veteran hockey players with more experience, which has helped to build a better and more competitive team. As the Predators develop their strategies, the team will begin to see more wins and be a better team overall. As one of the newest hockey teams founded, starting a hockey team in the southeastern region was a challenge and offered setbacks.
