Newark, New Jersey is home to the New Jersey Devils, a professional hockey team that is part of the National Hockey League. Originally formed in Kansas City, Missouri as the Kansas City Scouts, the team was moved to Denver in 1974 and renamed the Colorado Rockies. Six years later in 1982, the team was once again relocated to New Jersey and named the Devils. Known for their black, white, and red uniforms, the Devils are a well-known team. Their mascot is a seven-foot devil that is a favorite among fans.

Like many professional hockey teams, the Devils had a rocky start for their first 13 seasons and only made the playoffs once. Thing started to look up under the new management of Lou Lamoriello and the team made the playoffs for thirteen years in a row until the 2009-2010 season. In addition to making the playoffs, the team won three Stanley Cups in 1994-95, 1999-00, and 2002-03. The team plays in the Prudential Center which was built in 2008 and houses the Devil's home games.

In addition to the multiple team championships, several of the players have also achieved recognition for their hard work. Nine members of the Hockey Hall of Fame have had experience with the Devils, with six players, one coach, one executive, and even a broadcaster. Players such as Peter Stastny, Herb Brooks, and Doug Gilmour were inducted to the Hall of Fame for their hard work and success in the game.
