It was in 1972 when the Islanders came about as a part of the 1972-73 NHL season in order to keep the World Hockey Association from playing out of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The New York Islanders were recognized for their outstanding record in the NHL winning four consecutive Stanley Cup trophies from 1980 to 1983.
The Islanders were able to acquire forward Ed Westfall, a veteran forward from the Boston Bruins during the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft. Billy Harris came in as well to add more power to the team of New Yorkers. The plan of Islanders General Manager Bill Torey was to build a strong team gradually by keeping most of its players instead of trading veterans for new bloods.
In 1974, the efforts to build a strong team were seen after the New York Islanders made 88 points during the said season. This was 32 points higher from their previous season. The team was able to give a shot for playoffs and shut down their rival, the New York Rangers in three games.
This surprise was followed by another when the team faced the Pittsburgh Penguins in a best-of-seven series. The Islanders busted the Penguins after a come from behind victory, being down three games to none early on. The Islanders nearly did a repeat over the Philadelphia Flyers but soon bowed down during the seventh and deciding game in the third round of the playoffs. Their fourth year in NHL, 1975-76 season, was another history for the team when they were able to finish off with 101 points and later on made another 100-point record for the next four seasons.
In 1980, coach Al Arboure focused on how the team would perform during playoffs and despite dropping their season score to 91 points, the New York Islanders finally won the Stanley Cup.
