Vancouver Canucks News, standings, schedule and more... And more... Another Canadian pride to brace the ice is the Vancouver Canucks. The team is a part of the Northwestern Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. This team from Vancouver joined the 1970 NHL Expansion Draft together with the Buffalo Sabres. Early on, the Canucks showed potential and talent that granted them several Stanley Cup Finals and appearances in just a short time after their NHL entry.
Vancouver was originally represented by the Millionaires in 1911. Owned by Frank and Lester Patrick, the Millionaires played for the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and at the same time, won five Stanley Cups. The people of Vancouver had to wait for the Canucks for 42 years since the Millionaires disbanded in 1925. It wasn't an easy entry for the Canucks to be a part of the NHL, seeing their bid rejected twice.
Upon the team's entry, the Canucks found it difficult to set a remarkable tally. During their first game, the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Los Angeles Kings in a 1-3 game. Thus, the team entered the Smythe Division in summer of 1974 to seek improvement and better chemistry. With a winning record of 38-32-10 and a positive attitude, the Canucks entered the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1975 but lost to the Montreal Cananiens in five games.
It was in 1982 when the team made a significant run to reach the Stanley Cup Finals. They had a nine-game winning streak during the regular season and with an outstanding playoffs record of 11-2 against the Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames and Chicago Black Hawks, the Vancouver Canucks found the season a good one for them. And during their game against the Black Hawks, the Canucks saw their fans with white flags above their heads following Coach Roger Neilson's mocking gesture of surrender during the previous game.
The Canucks were able to push through the finals and face the New York Islanders. This made the Vancouver Canucks the first Western Canadian team to enter the Stanley Cup in 56 years. Despite a number of good plays by defenseman Harold Snepsts and Mikey Bossy, the Canucks lost the Cup.
