Winnipeg Jets News, standings, schedule and more... And more... Representing Manitoba, Canada for the National Hockey League, the Winnipeg Jets first made their appearance in the World Hockey Association in 1972 up to 1979. When the WHA gradually folded in 1979, several teams, including the Jets were absorbed by the NHL. But due to the established terms of the league, the team had to release three of their top six players in a reclamation draft and was left with no choice but to draft 18th out of the 21 teams.
With a depleted and star-lacking lineup, the team was left at the bottom of the league for the next two seasons. For the season to follow, the Jets were blessed to obtain Dale Hawerchuk and Dave Babych during the 1981 draft. This marked the improvement of the Winnipeg Jets, with more competitive players Paul Maclean, Thomas Steen, Laurie Boschman, David Ellett, Randy Carlyle and Doug Smail completing the powerful squad.
The new additions to the team brought light to Winnipeg. The Jets were able to make it to 11 playoffs for the next 15 years of regular season. But because the team was in the same division as the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, the two strongest during the 1980s, the Jets did not advance to the Campbell Conference Finals. They were able to knock down the Flames during one of their collisions but what appeared to be their toughest opponents to hinder their conference finals appearances were the Oilers, who won every series with the Jets.
When the NHL expanded in the United States, the franchise underwent a financial struggle as they were forced to pay players' salaries in US dollars while collecting Canadian dollars as revenues. An effort to save the team was made, thus team owner Barry Shenkarow eventually sold the franchise to Steven Gluckstern, an American businessman and Richard Burke. This meant the relocation of the Winnipeg Jets to Arizona. Eventually, the team was renamed Phoenix Coyotes.
